"Performative and painterly” This briefly describes the new series of large scale photographs and photogravure presented by the Danish artist Jacob Noel (1968) in his solo exhibition “Time between shadows”
Noel´s camera is not a witness of truth as seen in documentary photography. He reduces his subject matter to light and movement seeking no clear narrative, wanting no specific association. Therefore “Time between shadows” is just as poetic as it is ambiguous, playing on the mystic of darkness and the grace of coincidences.
City lights, architecture and urban space flow into each other. Through the use of abstract form, layering of colour and a playfulness in action. The production of Noel´s photography relates conceptually to the composer John Cage, as Cage´s compositions also indicate a mindful and intentional structure given the unforeseen element of chance.
