CLAY KETTER: DO YOU SEE WHAT I MEAN

1 September - 5 November 2017

Clay Ketter, an American artist, has lived and worked in Malmö, Sweden for the past 30 years. His art is known for its clear style, whether in the form of paintings, sculptures, installations, or photographs. Ketter's work follows a logical evolutionary path, yet he still manages to surprise his viewers. His art is simple, yet imbued with themes that hint at a melancholic acceptance of the mundane. Despite their matter-of-fact precision, Ketter's art has often challenged the distinction between craftsmanship and fine art and leaves an impression of persistent absence that illuminates and refutes these distinctions. Arguably non-representational the work shares similarities with documentary-style art, although with a warped twist. Ketter's art is influenced by American Neo-Avant-Garde, Pop Art, Minimalism, and Post-Minimalism, but he rejects any dogmatic stasis associated with these movements. As a student in the 1980s, Ketter was influenced by Punk and Post-Punk culture, which contributed to his later thinking and artistic direction.
