SHANE BROX: CONFINED SAVAGERY

16 August - 7 September 2024

It is a pleasure to invite you to "Confined Savagery", an exhibition with new floor and wall sculptures by Shane Brox. Brox was born in Canada, grew up in Norway, and lives and works in Copenhagen today. His artistic practice mainly includes sculptures and large-scale fibre installations. Brox creates his works using natural and synthetic materials, including vintage textiles, cotton, linen, yarn, felt, string, ribbon, wool, silk, acrylic, and rayon.

Confined Savagery

Have you ever considered what form your curbed wild side would take if you dared to put down your shields and let it loose to return to a more authentic self without prejudice? It is the condition and the answer that Shane Brox explores and seeks in his art.

Through a journey into the hidden landscapes of the uninhibited mind, Brox draws on references from surrealism and psychedelia to folkloric art and plant organisms. In this new series of sculptures for his first solo exhibition in the gallery, a further kinship with the freedom-seeking and aesthetic values that emerged with the Rococo in the middle of the 18th century can be sensed. Curved lines, asymmetry and mimicry of nature are apparent elements in the extravagance and looseness of the works.

With their labyrinthine compositions, Brox's sculptures poignantly interpret his feeling of trapped wildness. They also symbolize redemption and the potential for liberation if one dares to overcome one's inner fears. Shaping these sculptures is a profound journey for Brox, a constant exchange between intuition and control, the playful and the disciplined, the free and the captive.

Shane Brox's ultimate desire is to ignite a sense of wonder, joy, and transformation in his audience at first sight. He also harbours a deep hope to inspire a release of the inherent wildness in each of us, encouraging us to embrace our authentic selves.

We look forward to welcoming you to "Confined Savagery.”
