Thomas Bang's artistic journey began outside of Denmark. He studied art at various American universities between 1956 and 1964. In 1967 Bang began working in sculpture and contributed to the development of contemporary object- and installation-based sculpture. He participated in exhibitions such as “When Attitudes Become Form”, “Soft Art”, and “Between Object and Environment”, which helped set a new agenda for international sculpture. He also exhibited in numerous solo- and group exhibitions in the U.S. through the 1980s and returned to Denmark in 1991. Bang began, early on, to articulate his interest in unpredictability, transformation and the tension between realization and potential, which he would go on to pursue for many years. A 350-page monograph titled "Apparatus For Unstable Conditions", published by Kerber Verlag in 2023, provides a comprehensive overview and in-depth analysis of Bang's strategies and expansions in his work from the 1960s until today.
