Lars Nørgård (b. 1956, Aalborg, Denmark) is one of the most distinctive voices in Danish contemporary painting. Working across painting, drawing, graphics and sculpture, he has developed a highly individual visual language in which abstraction and figuration merge into complex, energetic and often unexpected compositions. At the heart of Nørgård's practice is an ongoing exploration of the possibilities of painting. His works unfold through a dynamic interplay of colour, form, gesture and line, where recognisable fragments coexist with abstract structures and elusive imagery. Geometric constructions collide with organic shapes, while expressive brushwork and intricate drawn elements introduce multiple layers of movement and visual tension. Rather than offering a fixed narrative or a clearly defined point of departure, Nørgård creates pictorial worlds that invite interpretation. His compositions seem to evolve through a continuous process of construction and disruption, in which one form suggests another and unexpected relationships emerge. The resulting imagery is playful yet complex, balancing spontaneity with a remarkable sense of compositional control. A distinctive feature of his work is the ability to bring together seemingly contradictory elements: order and chaos, precision and improvisation, humour and seriousness. His paintings possess an almost theatrical quality, where forms appear to interact, overlap and negotiate their place within the picture plane. There is a constant sense of movement, as if the composition is caught in the middle of an unfolding event. Nørgård's artistic development has been shaped by his early engagement with American abstract painting, particularly during his studies at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco, as well as his participation in the experimental Danish art community Værkstedet Værst in the early 1980s. These experiences contributed to his enduring interest in the relationship between abstraction, figuration and the expressive possibilities of drawing.
Today, his work is represented in numerous private collections and major Danish museum collections, including the National Gallery of Denmark, ARoS, ARKEN, KUNSTEN and Horsens Art Museum, reflecting his longstanding contribution to the development of contemporary Danish painting.
Lars Nørgård's paintings ultimately resist a single interpretation. They are open, restless, and imaginative spaces where the familiar becomes unfamiliar, and where painting itself remains an ongoing adventure.
